With alternative therapies becoming ever more popular rather than immediately resorting to anti-depressant drugs, there is more call for people to take it up as a career option. There are various routes you can take in order to develop a career in psychotherapy with many courses and further education facilities that make it possible. Here are some of the different options for those interested in the sector of work and also the skills you will require to gain access to these courses;

- Skills and interests – There are certain attributes a person should have when thinking of taking psychotherapy as their career path these include;

• Being empathetic with those in emotional situations, and you would also have to have the ability to not judge those that need to talk about feelings that are seen as a taboo in a social environment. This is because if you judge those then you won’t be able to work through their problems and rectify their feelings and if they can’t work through why they feel this certain way then they may end up acting on these feelings, although many people that feel these feelings rarely act on them.

• You must be a good listener and be able to form structured questions from listening to the person’s feelings. This is because you need to listen to start with so you can establish some background on exactly how the person feels so you can gain an insight and then be able to help them talk through the problem they are facing.

• You should have enough confidence to be able to bring up and confront painful aspects of the person’s life, this is vital because other wise you may spend many sessions with the person and just constantly side stepping the main issue causing the person problems.

• Have an appreciation of many different peoples past experiences and cultural backgrounds. This is because if there is an issue that is caused by the persons cultural background you would need to know how to work around that issue without seeming to offend their religion or other cultural traditions.

- The way in which people usually end up working in the psychotherapy field as a second job or as a result of another job in a similar sector such as; psychology, counselling or sociology etc. So the people usually have qualifications for the other areas and take on this kind of work and the courses available in the subject after an amount of time in one of the mentioned fields above.
