There are different teachings, known as theories, of psychoanalysis work and each one is believed to have varying results on the patient and all work on different types of time scales. Most people start developing a career in the psychoanalysis sector along side continuing work in their job such as psychologist or sociologist. Different variations on the work carried out within psychoanalysis are;

Interpersonal psychoanalysis – This is the theory of an American psychiatrist, Harry Stack Sullivan, his thoughts on the issue consisted of analysing the patients interactions with others in social environments and also their behaviour with the actual analyst in their sessions with one another. He believed that witnessing their social behaviour can show a lot of signs as to what can be causing the person issues. The analysis of the person’s interactive skills and actions is carried out by the analyst forming a number of extremely detailed questions to ask the person helping them describe how they act in certain social environments. Once the analysis is complete they are then suppose to be able to determine some possible causes for the persons feelings they are experiencing. This also aids the patient in the way that they will become more aware of their actions and thoughts when in certain social situations that they may have felt uncomfortable in previously.

General psychoanalysis – This is the most widely used type of analysis and is basically the study of all unconscious actions carried out by the patient that may reflect certain restrictions or boundaries in their mental state. It is mainly used to try and determine the thoughts provoking neurotic behaviour; this behaviour can come in various forms ranging from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) to things such as anxiety, phobias and even pyromania. All of these disorders are usually the result of a previous experience that proved traumatic and has there fore had a lasting impression on their subconscious thoughts. This is how the therapy is suppose to work by working on a subconscious level with the patient to bring through the feelings that caused them to feel like this to begin with. So all the work done during sessions is done to unlock their unaware section of thought so they begin to have the ability to talk and remember things they may not be able to when in their normal train of thought.

There are many more types of psychoanalysis therapy that work in different ways but usually end up having the same end results. To discover a kind of therapy that would suit your needs you may want to speak to your doctor as they would be able to refer you to a specialist therapist.
